Returning members - step-by-step

Step-by-step guide for returning members

This guide is for practitioners who wish to apply for Full UK membership and who:

  • previously held Full UK membership which has lapsed for more than two years
  • have been an Overseas member for more than two years and are returning to the UK to live and practise.

Step 1

You make an initial enquiry by filling in our online enquiry form and sending it to BAcC Admissions

Step 2

If you were a Full UK member longer than two years ago, we will send you an application pack. Please go to Step 5

If you have been an Overseas member for longer than two years and are returning to the UK, we will ask you to provide evidence that you have been in continuous practice during your time overseas. This might take the form of, for example, a contract between practice and practitioner, rent receipts, sworn statements, or your appointment diary. If you have not been in practice during your time overseas, please make this clear on your enquiry form

Admissions may contact you to clarify any details you give on your enquiry form

Step 3

Admissions carry out an initial assessment. If you have not been in practice during your time overseas, or if the evidence you provide of your continuous practice overseas in not satisfactory, we will send you an application pack. Please go to Step 5

If the evidence you provide of your continuous practice overseas is satisfactory, you are offered Provisional membership

Step 4

You register as a Provisional member and pay your subscription. Admissions then send you a Full UK membership application pack and you have three months in which to submit your completed application. Please note, Provisional membership lasts for up to six months and may then be withdrawn or renewed at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

Step 5

Your completed application is assessed by one of our assessors, who can recommend one of the following to the Admissions Committee:

1 You are invited to attend an interview in London.
2 You get a practice visit from a facilitator who will observe you treating patients.
3 Your application is rejected.

Step 6

The Admissions Committee recommends one of the following:

1 An offer of Full UK membership, subject to ratification.
2 An offer of Provisional membership together with a personal development plan (PDP) and notice of how long you have to complete any recommendations made in order to progress to Full UK membership.

Provisional membership

Provisional membership can be offered to new applicants, or to members who have been out of Full UK membership for longer than two years, who may need additional skills or training in order to become eligible for Full UK membership.

Provisional membership includes insurance to practise. However, Provisional members are not listed in the Register of Members or on the BAcC website practitioner search and are not allowed to advertise as a BAcC member or use the letters MBAcC.
